I read this blog the other day and gave myself a moment or two to digest and retort. Its time for the retort! Bad Career Choice: Do What You Love touches on a few points that are very relevant, others, not so much. I believe her point was to find a career that you can do and don't mind getting paid for, but don't go looking for love in something that cant give it back. My first point is why would you look for your career to provide love (or the ultimate fulfillment)? and people do do this. It is true that your career will be something that takes up most of your time in your adult life, kind of like your mattress. And just like your mattress, you want to find something that you can live with and get the most out of. But just like your mattress, your career serves a purpose; its a means to an end, so to speak.
The tone of her blog made me think that the people she was addressing use their career as a significant other. The workaholics wife. And for Baby Boomers, that was probably the case. But for us Gen X and Millennials, we have a life. That doesn't mean that what we do shouldn't fulfill us. It just means that we are acutely aware that it is a means to feed ourselves and finance all of our pretty toys and vacations we plan to take, as a reward for being grownups. hmmmmmm
Sounds like we may be in the process of smashing these ideals into the ground. Don't tell us what our careers should mean to us. Don't tell us what being an adult is supposed to look like. We may not be able to change the world, yet, but we are going to make the world fit into our plans.
So in summary, I'll be reading no more blogs about careers and life trends, screw this, I'm just going to do it!
